We woke up yesterday to a new United States of America. One in which a good number of us became something less than human, and the majority of the rest are just a resource to be squeezed dry and thrown away. A man and a party that stand for just about everything we were thought as children is bad – selfishness, cheating, lying, racism, crassness, lack of concern for others, predatory sexual behavior and objectification have become the rulers and the symbols of what we stand for. The first thing new king of the USA has done (after changing his Twitter byline to President of the United States) was to announce the appointment of people who are just the same – old, unprincipled men who have distinguished themselves by their exceptional lack of heart – for his ministers.
Today, start a revolution of kindness. Take our humanity back. It doesn’t take much, and you can do it all by yourself.
-Stand up to give your seat to a senior.
-Put away $20-$30 and buy a few gloves and scarves this holiday season, wrap them in some gift paper, and give them to the homeless “regulars” you see on your street every day. They probably haven’t received a gift in years, and opening one will matter as much as the warmth on a cold night. Some rain gear would be nice, too.
-Tell your child that lying and being mean to people is still wrong, and make sure it sticks.
-Say hello to a stranger you pass, or at least look them in the eye and smile.
-Bring a single flower to your escort or a favorite AMP girl, and let them know that their service is appreciated.
-Tell your barista their coffee is awesome.
-Let that car into your lane.
-Show your partner(s) you love them in some small but meaningful way.
It’s a quiet revolution. It’s not very glamorous. But, it’s the most important revolution of all. It’s the kind of revolution that changes hearts. We tried changing minds and it didn’t work, let’s try to change hearts instead, starting with our own.
